The Cartel by Don Winslow Book Summary

The New York Times bestselling second novel in the explosive Power of the Dog series—an action-filled look at the drug trade that takes you deep inside a world riddled with corruption, betrayal, and bloody revenge.

Book Two of the Power of the Dog Series

It’s 2004. Adán Barrera, kingpin of El Federación, is languishing in a California federal prison. Ex-DEA agent Art Keller passes his days in a monastery, having lost everything to his thirty-year blood feud with the drug lord. Then Barrera escapes. Now, there’s a two-million-dollar bounty on Keller’s head and no one else capable of taking Barrera down. As the carnage of the drug war reaches surreal new heights, the two men are locked in a savage struggle that will stretch from the mountains of Sinaloa to the shores of Veracruz, to the halls of power in Washington, ensnaring countless others in its wake. Internationally bestselling author Don Winslow's The Cartel is the searing, unfiltered epic of the drug war in the twenty-first century.

Craziest but best book ever. The story that is told here is serious but scary, yet honest and true about the length a hero will go to do the right thing. Arthur Keller is the hero, but at a very great cost. Few men could do what he has done, very few. This story is about courage in the face of evil and the task of perseverance that every hero must face. Excellent but intense story. Read.

Great book!. Another great read. Quick pace and good characters.

Hungry Dave. This book is a tour de force. Many aspects of this book remind me of The rise and fall of the third Reich. I'll remember this one for a long time.

Great book. It was quite a bit longer than i am used too, but i enjoed it alot. Its very violent and graphic so be prepared.

Epic. Brilliant work

Great Work. Loved how Winslow constantly weaves the impact of the WoD (and unintended consequences) into the lives of the characters.

Excellent. Well-researched, good plot & very true to the differing cultures of Mexico: border towns, chilangos & the narcos. Hated for it to end!!!

So Good. I can't wait for his next book!

Amazing. Read a long book in two days it was that good.

Great reading. Hard to put it down.

Suspenseful. What a great and vivid book! I love cartels, drugs, and violence and this book has it all! Even though it's fictional there is so much truth behind it!

Wow!. As compelling a book as it gets. Although the subject matter was disturbing to say the least, the book was thoroughly enjoyable.

Action Packed. Graphic novel based on actual atrocities that took place. Interesting read!

Fantastic book!. Great story on the cartel. It's almost as if it's the real thing!!

As wearying as its protagonist. A lot of mansplaining the war on drugs and some improbable action sequences. Pretty tedious for a supposed thriller.

The Cartel. Thank you, Mr. Winslow! My apartment turned into it’s own “safe house” this past week as I read both of these magnificent novels, ‘The Power of the Dog’ and ‘The Cartel’. Loved the layers and complexities of both “ADAN” and “KELLER” but my surprising joy was “NARCO POLO.” I’ll gladly volunteer to be taken hostage by your next novel!

Great story. Way too long.. Although the author is amazing and the book is entertaining, we almost could do without a third of the book and still get 95% of the story. If you have a lot of time on your hands. Go for it.

Great Book. Very long book 1600 pages but it was fascinating how the cartels work . Corruption was everywhere I guess cause the money was enormous .

The Cartel. Fantastic book! Very long....but well worth the time invested. Highly recommended!

Amazing!. One of the best books I've ever read. Happened upon it in the popular reading section at the library and gave it a shot. Glad I did. Didn't want it to end even as brutal as it was. Really gets into the intracacies of the drug war and shows how the whole Mexican country and government can be corrupted and the American role of fueling the drug violence. Bravo Mr. Winslow, this book was nothing short of perfect. I'm reading Power of the Dog now. Kind of wish I'd read it first to get the complete story in order but after finishing the Cartel I needed more and had to the back story to these characters.

The Cartel. Wonderfully written. Great story. Don Winslow should be the one making drug policy for the US. The futility of the War on Drugs. We lost, very very very bad guys won. Winslow tell a great story. He changed my thinking about the drug laws. He doesn't say it, nor do I know if he believes it. He just tell the story. Drugs have to be made legal. No way to stop them coming across the border. Drug trade has helped lead to the disintegration of the Mexican state. US is partially responsible. Of course, corrupt Mexican politicians are also responsible. I've read other books by Winslow and they are all great. He has something to say that is important to all Americans. George Will wrote a column about his books and George Will being someone I greatly admire, I immediately went and purchased this one. Every America should read this. Shawn Bayer

The Cartel. Timely, brutal, interesting, well written and more truth than fiction! This could be a historic novel.

Great Book. Impressive current "historical fiction" that reads rapidly. Winslow is an impressive story teller. A job done exceptionally well.

Breathtaking heartbreaking and cinematic. Breathtaking heartbreaking and cinematic. I read don's two books, The power of the dog and The cartel back to back and it was one hell of an experience as a reader, thrust into a story that grips you like a dog with its jaws around your throat; it won't let go. As a piece the story never stumbles or goes soft even as it has the grace to break your heart while it forces you to face the darkness you're afraid to see. The story is epic and sweeping across decades and shows uncommon heroism, stunning depravity and kindness, heartbreak that makes you weep, courage that stops the heart, sadism that you must look away from in your own head. In the end for me when I realized what Thecartel was I was rocked to the core

The Cartel. Very compelling story that mirrored very real events and figures in the ongoing drug wars. The book touches on the struggles to survive and prosper in a world without boundaries. Using fictional characters the author illustrates the ongoing political, ethical, and emotional struggles that are made every day in an ongoing war over the drug trade. Very well written.

The best ever. The winter of Frankie the machine, Sartori, and savages.I didn't think Don Winslow's books could ever get any better.I was wrong. This may be the best book in this genre that I have ever read, and I read a lot of books. Great summer read. I hope a lot of people read and reflect on it, especially if they're lying on the beach in Mexico.

A superb sequel. As good as I could have hoped. One of the best books I have read all year. Winslow once again pulls from multiple spheres of the drug trade, weaving stories of sheer terror with moments of true heroism. My only complaint is that it wasn't an extra 500 pages. I could have kept reading and reading.

One of Winslow's Best!. Could not put this one down. Have long been a huge fan of Don Winslow and always feel that way about his books....however this one even more so! It's heartbreaking, it's cruel, raw and at times it makes you seriously wonder about the eventual fate of mankind. This is fiction but inspired by real events and sadly not that far from reality.
