Endzone Book Summary

The New York Times Bestseller

Endzone tells the story of how college football's most successful, richest and respected program almost lost all three in less than a decade - and entirely of its own doing. It is a story of hubris, greed, and betrayal - a tale more suited to Wall Street than the world's top public university.

Author John U. Bacon takes you inside the offices, the board rooms and the locker rooms of the University of Michigan to see what happened, and why - with countless eye-opening, head-shaking scenes of conflict and conquest.

But Endzone is also an inspiring story of redemption and revival. When those who loved Michigan football the most recognized it was being attacked from within, they rallied to reclaim the values that made it great for over a century -- values that went deeper than dollars. The list of heroes includes players, students, lettermen, fans and faculty - and the leaders who had the courage to listen to them.

Their unprecedented uprising produced a new athletic director, and a new coach - the hottest in the land - who vindicated the fans' faith when he turned down more money and fame to return to the place he loved most: Michigan.

If you love a good story, you'll want to dive into Endzone: The Rise, Fall and Return of Michigan Football.

  • Interesting behind the scenes look

Good behind the scene look at the Dave Brandon era. Got me really pumped for the future. I did think Bacon went a little over the top gong on and on about what makes a "Michigan Man." I couldn't help rolling my eyes quite a bit with some of the chest-beating and self-patting on the back. Still I enjoyed it. Go blue!
  • A must read for any true M fan

Bacon's writing is an intricate weave of history, storytelling and critical journalism. Detail-laden and fact intensive, the book entertains and educates simultaneously. Although Bacon's writing bares a clear agenda, it is at least supported by objective evidence and, at times, tempered with countervailing perspective. If you lived through the drama that was Michigan athletics, this chronicles the experience. Timothy L. Williams Michigan Football Letterwinner, 87', 88', and 89'

Fantastic story. Truth IS stranger than fiction. You can't make this story up. Amazing how many seemingly unrelated events had to come together to get Harbaugh back to AA. That said, so many leadership lessons that apply outside of this particular set of circumstances. A good read even if you are not a Michigan fan or alum.

  • Great Look At Few Years Of Michigan Football History

This book is a wonderfully researched story of a narrow segment on the timeline of Michigan football. That said, many think now that the narrow look at the Michigan football timeline is one of the most important few years in its history. I agree and this book offers a terrific inspection of the performance and relationships of people important to the program, juxtaposing them against other icons in the program's history. Great read for any and all fans of Michigan football.

Great read. John Bacon does an excellent job of telling the great stories behind the scenes during Michigan Football's most troubled moments to its greatest success story yet........hiring Jim Harbaugh!
  • Don't buy the e-book

The e-book is littered with typos and even has paragraphs of missing text. Avoid! Buy the actual book if you wish to read this.

The book is well researched and informative, but the huge number of typos destroys the enjoyment of a good read - and this from a University of Michigan professor who is writing about the importance of maintaining the strong U of M tradition!

The truth has come out. I only hope that Dave Brandon and Mary Sue Coleman (inarguably the worst AD and president in school history) have the guts to read it.
