Further to our continued interest in microbiology as a prime discipline in life sciences, we are pleased to present a double number special issue of Science Progress on microbial physiology. There is no surprise in placing such special emphasis on microbiology, given the intimate involvement of microorganisms in almost every aspect of our life ranging from food production to space exploration. It was once argued that we live on the planet of the bacteria and this was a reflection of the ancient and ubiquitous presence of these microorganisms being existent for 3.5 billion years and occurring at overwhelming numbers in different environments (1). Because of their being unicellular entities and their seemingly simple cellular structure, certain microorganisms have been used as experimental systems for the study of biological processes, which has led to central biological findings, notably the discovery that genes are made of DNA and the description of DNA structure (2). It is interesting to note that most of our knowledge in gene expression and regulation in animals and plants and the methodologies employed to create this knowledge have been the result of researching bugs. The rationale behind using microorganisms as model systems has been that the single, simple microbial cell may be related to a unit in a multi-celled, complex organism. Jacques Monod once hypothesized that if we understand E. coli, we will be able to understand Elephant. Although this has proved relevant, it established an erroneous idea that microbes are truly simple entities and just buckets of enzymes. This concept has been certainly amended over the last decades, where advanced and sophisticated methodologies allowed much better observation of the structure and behaviour of microbial cells. Microbial physiology is the science that is concerned with the study of the metabolic activities, subcellular structure, growth and survival of microorganisms. It has been viewed as a central discipline in microbiology and other related sciences. As with other sciences, the progress in experimental procedures has advanced microbial physiology and broadened its scope. However, and also as with other sciences, advancing microbial physiology would not have been possible without the introduction of numerous hypotheses and theories that paved the way for experimental endeavours. Beside the fundamental contributions of pioneering microbiologists, speculations and theories presented by microbial physiologists like Jacques Monod, Ole Maaloe and Frederick Neidhardt, for example, have laid the bases for modern microbial physiology and directed research trends within this area (3).
