Goosebumps covered my arms and legs. The sunscreen I had slathered on my skin just hours earlier would not be necessary. For a marathon, it was a perfect day. I ripped a hole in the bottom of the 30-gallon garbage bag I had brought with me and pulled it over my head, draping the clear plastic over my body for warmth. It was time to begin moving down the hill, toward the start. With tears in their eyes and strength in their arms as if they were sending them off to war, husbands, wives, mothers, fathers and children all kissed and hugged their runners. The runners gave them pecks in return and pushed them away in their excitement. I wasn't alone. My brother was here somewhere. He was in the crowd that stayed back on top of the hill, far away from the confusion. Matthew could not handle this kind of scene, so he would watch the start of the race from above and he would cheer me on in his mind, knowing I was somewhere in this mess of people. I was counting on that.
