It was 1978 and I was in Indonesia having the time of my life as a Rotary Youth Exchange student when the letter that would signpost the road for the rest of my life arrived (no emails or text messages then!). My father was managing my university entrance paperwork while I was away for 12 months and he wrote to say that he had come across a two-year program in Medical Record Administration that he thought I might be interested in, even though I had previously thought of being a teacher. I read through the documents he had sent, agreed that it looked appealing and decided that if I did not enjoy it after the program, I could always do something else. So, I ended up at what was then the Cumberland College of Health Sciences and embarked on my career as a Health Information Manager (HIM). I really enjoyed the course, which focussed on medical terminology and medical science, coding, research methods and social sciences as well as medical record management. The things that stand out in my mind the most from those days were the afternoon anatomy sessions, using cadavers that had previously been dissected by medical students. Attending an autopsy and coronial inquest were also fascinating--even then I must have had an interest in mortality issues! I made a lot of good friends at the College and it has been interesting to track our different careers over the past 30 years. I remember a classroom discussion hosted by the eminent Professor Phyllis Watson, during which she asked us about our career aspirations. With the confidence of youth, I announced that I was going to work for the World Health Organization (WHO)--and with the wisdom of middle age, I can say that I have done this and it has been everything I hoped for back in 1979! After graduating with an Associate Diploma, I got my first job as a 'traditional HIM' at St Margaret's Hospital in Sydney. I was the only qualified person working with 3 to 4 clerical staff in our small Medical Record Department and it was a great experience. Our office door opened onto the back stairs leading to the Resident Medical Officers' lunch room and this made it easy for us to capture them to complete their front sheets and discharge summaries. The hospital was a very social place. We held annual morning teas to celebrate the Medical Record Department Resident-of-the-Year awards (complete with a plastic medical kit for the winning doctor), celebrated Christmas every year with buckets of Brandy Alexanders, made by the Sisters of St Joseph who ran the hospital, participated in cooking classes, played an annual cricket grudge match against the Royal Hospital for Women in the next suburb and generally celebrated when each extremely premature baby went home from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In the five years that I was there, we also introduced the hospital's very first computer system, with the major task of entering all of our Patient Master Index cards onto the computerised PMI and ADT system. This was at the time when Pacman was making its presence felt as an early computer game--how things have changed!
