Chinese Fans and seashells 2023 is an art catalogue of my works inspired by seashells and Chinese fans during my stay in Mui Wo , Hong Kong . It somehow reflects my first solo exhibition with the same title held at Calton Studios in Edinburgh, 1982. From the idea of using the triangle to investigate the possible spiritual rapport of the trinity to the return of observational drawings of the subject matter, I am in search perhaps of a deeper level of self identity: just what is the real purpose of doing what I am doing . What exactly is the roots of my culture, in art and in spirituality. The recent departure of Padre Gianni gave me a chance to reflect on such questions, as well as on the lyrics he wrote on Seashells when I was a teenager. Perhaps it is no pure coincidence I did happen to work on this theme seashells and Chinese fans at the beginning of my career as an artist. Two videos embedded in this catalogue are to give an answer to my reflection on the subject. ‘ seashells’ is a short sequence created for Padre Gianni as it is based on his own lyrics. ‘ Becoming light’ is another short sequence I created inspired by poet Su Shi of Song Dynasty.
