Bart Steel is a graduate of the Space Academy and prepares to take over his father’s business, a fleet of spaceships for interstellar travel. In this future, humans and Lhari, an alien race, have an agreement to share their knowledge about space travel. However, Lhari, although help humans to travel faster than the light, don’t share all the things they know about space travel. Humans travel faster than the light, but, as Lhari constantly tell them, they must sleep during the travel if they want to survive. Some of the humans don’t believe in that and try to find a way and discover Lhari’s secrets.
Bart joins a group of humans who want to steal the secret of Lhari and in order to do that, e disguises as a Lhari and boards on one of their ships that travels to the Lhari’s home world. The intention of Bart is to steal the secret of the Warp Drive, something that many humans tried before, but none of them succeeded.
But, during the journey Bart learns that not everything is as it seems.
