La diócesis de Oria (en latín: Dioecesis Uritana) es una circunscripción eclesiástica de la Iglesia católica, sufragánea de la arquidiócesis de Taranto, perteneciente a la región eclesiástica de Apulia. Tiene por patrono a san Barsanufio de Gaza. El actual obispo es Vincenzo Pisanello.[1] Territorio La diócesis de Oria se extiende sobre una superficie de 921 km² y está dividida en 43 parroquias. El territorio comprende los municipios de Oria, Ceglie Messapica, Erchie, Francavilla Fontana, Latiano, Torre Santa Susanna y Villa Castelli, de la provincia de Brindisi, y los municipios de Avetrana, Maruggio, Sava y Manduria, de la provincia de Taranto. La sede episcopal es la ciudad de Oria, donde se encuentra la Catedral basílica de la Asunción de María.[1] Entre los santuarios o las basílicas más importantes de la diócesis se encuentran: la basílica menor del Santísimo Rosario en Francavilla y el santuario de San Cósimo alla Macchia en Oria.[2] Historia Según la tradición, común a toda la región de Puglia, se atribuye la primera predicación al ministerio de Pedro Apóstol. Según esta, a su paso por Oria, consagró el primer obispo de la ciudad. Lo más seguro es que la floreciente comunidad hebrea haya dado paso a la presencia de los primeros cristianos. Aun así, la presencia de una diócesis, como jurisdicción eclesiástica, se remonta a la destrucción de Brindisi por parte de los longobardos, lo cual hizo que la sede de esta ciudad se transfiriera a Oria. El primer obispo documentado, sin embargo, Magelpoto, cuyo nombre se encuentra en un documento del papa Adriano I, en 785. Desde sus orígenes hasta el siglo X, en Oria convivían dos ritos, el romano y el bizantino, pero las relaciones con los griegos se fueron poniendo más tensas a partir de este siglo, cuando un funcionario del emperador de Oriente asesinó al obispo Andrea en 979.[3] En la primera mitad del siglo XI la diócesis fue elevada a arquidiócesis, teniendo como sufragáneas Ostuni y Monopoli. Durante el dominio normando, a partir de 1089, los arzobispos comenzaron a vivir formalmente en Brindisi, bajo la escusa de que en realidad nunca había existido una diócesis de Oria, ya que esta era solo sede momentánea de la diócesis de Brindisis, por la destrucción de los longobardos. Los papas confirmaron esta decisión, pero para colocar fin a la rivalidad que se presentó por más de tres siglos entre las dos ciudades, el 8 de mayo de 1591, el papa Gregorio XIV, mediante bula Regiminis Universae Ecclesiae, estableció formalmente la diócesis de Oria, sustrayendo parte del territorio de Brindisi y sometiéndola como sufragánea de Taranto.[3] El primer obispo de Oria fue el teatino Vicenzo Del Tufo, que gobernó solo por cuatro años. Su sucesor, Lucio Fornari, hizo por primera vez una visita general de la diócesis. Vida consagrada En el territorio diocesano trabajan unas 195 religiosas, 38 religiosos (de los cuales 37 son sacerdotes).[1] Entre los institutos o sociedades presentes en la diócesis se encuentran: el Instituto de las Hijas del Divino Celo, la Orden de los Hermanos Menores, la Congregación de Hermanas de María Dolorosa, las Monjas de la Orden de San Benito, la Congregación de la Pasión, la Orden del Císter, las Hermanas Antonianas, las Discípulas del Buen Pastor y las Hermanas Estigmatinas.[7] De estos destacan las Discípulas del Buen Pastor, fundadas en Manduria, territorio de la diócesis, en 1932, por la noble María Francisca Pasanisi.[8] Referencias Bibliografía AP (2015).
