Dentro de Marvel Comics, la mayoría de los comics tienen lugar dentro del Universo Marvel ficticio, que a su vez es parte de un multiverso más grande. Comenzando con los problemas del Capitán Britania, la continuidad principal en la que tienen lugar la mayoría de las historias de Marvel se designó como Tierra-616, y el Multiverso se estableció como protegido por Merlyn. Cada universo tiene un Capitán Britania designado para proteger su versión de las Islas Británicas. Estos protectores se conocen colectivamente como Captain Britain Corps. Cinco tribus africanas obtuvieron por medio de un meteorito de Vibranium, un metal extraterrestre, el cual les otorgó habilidades sobrehumanas ingeridas de una hierba en forma de corazón afectada por el metal. Con esto, Un rey de Wakanda se convierte en el primer Pantera Negra y así dirigió a las cuatro tribus (mientras que la tribu Jabari se exilia en las montañas) Formando la nación de Wakanda.
