George Gordon Byron (Londres, 22 de enero de 1788-Mesolongi, 19 de abril de 1824), conocido como lord Byron, fue un revolucionario y poeta del movimiento del romanticismo británico, antecedente de la figura del poeta maldito. Debido a su talento poético, su personalidad, su atractivo físico y su vida de escándalos, fue una celebridad de su época. Fue sexto barón de Byron. La única hija legítima suya, Ada Lovelace, fue una figura fundacional en el campo de la programación de computadoras, basándose en sus apuntes para la Máquina Analítica de Charles Babbage. Los hijos extramatrimoniales de Byron incluyen a Allegra Byron, quien falleció en la infancia, y posiblemente a Elizabeth Medora Leigh, hija de su media hermana Augusta Leigh. Así, a esa edad y en compañía de su madre en Aberdeen, George heredó de su progenitor poco más que deudas y los gastos de su funeral. No obstante, si la herencia material del padre fue poco más que un disgusto para el hijo, no se puede decir lo mismo de la herencia espiritual, ya que el joven conservaría su amor por la belleza, el culto a la galantería, y su inclinación hacia la vida licenciosa. De su madre, en cambio, heredaría la dulzura y el cariño que esta le ofreció, pero también su atroz temperamento. Byron nació con una deformidad en el pie derecho, que era zambo. Era patihendido, lo que significa que tenía los dedos del pie hacia adentro. Byron siempre apostó a que tal deformación había sido debida a la mojigatería de su madre, quien rechazó asistencia médica en el parto. Debido a esta anomalía, su padre dijo que jamás llegaría a andar. Pero el pequeño Byron, que tuvo que calzar un zapato ortopédico durante toda la infancia, se rebeló a la creencia del padre y aprendió a correr antes que a caminar, y aun cuando anduvo cojo, presumía de andar más rápido que muchos. Al alcanzar la juventud, sus maneras y modales le sirvieron para disimular su cojera, haciéndola parecer un caminar excéntrico y al mismo tiempo distinguido. Byron tuvo que soportar muchas burlas y rechazos por su cojera. No obstante, con el tiempo aprendió a defenderse bajo la máxima de que «cuando un miembro se debilita siempre hay otro que lo compensa», palabras a las que en su vida siempre haría honor. Además de la cojera sufrió mucho por el frío, ya que sus huesos siempre fueron frágiles, algo que le causaba gran malestar. Infancia La relación de sus padres, que marcó a Byron de forma importante, podría definirse como tempestuosa. Si bien Byron jamás pudo considerar a su padre como un auténtico amante de su madre, esta, a pesar de su rencor por lo ilícito de la vida de su marido, se volvió triste e inconsolable tras su pérdida. Byron describiría la relación que vivió con su madre Catherine como una aventura de golpes y besos. Catherine llamaba con frecuencia al pequeño Byron: cojo bribón o pequeño diablo, mientras él la llamaba vieja o la viuda. Pese a esta relación de amor-odio, Byron diría posteriormente que su madre fue la única que lo entendía. Cuando cumplió la edad de nueve años, su madre lo puso en manos de una joven institutriz y enfermera escocesa, devota calvinista, llamada Mary Gray. Esta lo inició en la lectura de la Biblia y en el sexo, ya que en aquel entonces, pese a su corta edad, tuvo sus primeras relaciones sexuales con Mary. Junto a ella pasó el verano en el valle del Dee, en una casa de campo cercana a Abergeldie, y contempló las aficiones alcohólicas y orgiásticas de Mary Gray. De aquella época, además del mundo que se le descubrió a través de la sexualidad con la joven Mary Gray, a quien guardaría para siempre a fuego en su memoria, Byron recordó también la belleza de las montañas septentrionales escocesas, la cual admiró durante su estancia e indagó en sus recovecos a diario en sus continuas escapadas, a pesar de su latente cojera. Byron no guardó recuerdo amargo de aquellas primeras relaciones sexuales y lecturas religiosas, ni contó al respecto que le hubieran perjudicado de modo alguno. Contrariamente, afirmó que la experiencia en el valle del Dee le ayudó a madurar y comprender de forma precoz el sentimiento de la melancolía. Esto ocurrió mientras vivía en la ciudad escocesa de Aberdeen, donde se inició en latín e historia con la ayuda de un preceptor presbiteriano hasta su entrada en la Aberdeen Grammar School. Mientras cursaba el cuarto grado en la histórica escuela, fue requerida su presencia en Inglaterra debido al fallecimiento de su tío abuelo lord William Byron, quinto barón de Byron. Una vez allí, con la muerte de su tío abuelo, se le reconoció su aristocracia, y aunque nunca le tuvo excesivo aprecio al título que le correspondía, la experiencia le hizo ampliar sus horizontes y creyó crecer de golpe al imaginarse en un futuro en la Cámara de los Lores. Madre, hijo e institutriz fueron a vivir a la recién heredada Newstead Abbey, la cual, para su sorpresa, frente a sus aspiraciones de nueva riqueza, estaba cargada de deudas y en muy mal estado. Su madre contrató para gestión y administración de bienes al abogado londinense John Hanson, quien se haría cargo de los asuntos familiares hasta que el pequeño George contase con la edad suficiente. Byron recordaría gratamente que esta fue la mejor residencia que tuvo. Allí conoció y se enamoró de su prima Mary Duff, quien lo rechazó por ser un chico muy joven para ella. Este hecho lo dejó desolado y lo animó a realizar sus primeras composiciones. Cabe decir que el tío abuelo de George había pasado los últimos años de su vida viviendo casi como un ermitaño, actitud que no iba acorde con los años que vivió antes de su reclusión. De esos años se recuerda que lo llamaban el Villano y que también los vivió de un modo bastante licencioso. Entre sus acciones destaca el intento de asesinato de su esposa lanzándola a un lago tras una discusión doméstica. De este hombre heredó George su título familiar y sus deudas. El pequeño Byron fue enviado al colegio del doctor Glennie, en Dulwich. Allí sus estudios se vieron interrumpidos constantemente por las manías de su afectada madre, quien continuamente irrumpía en su estancia para llevarlo consigo durante largos periodos.
