Steven Pinker Biografía y Hechos
Steven Arthur Pinker (Montreal, 18 de septiembre de 1954) es un psicólogo experimental, científico cognitivo, lingüista y escritor canadiense. Es profesor en el Harvard College y titular del “Johnstone Family Professorship” en el Departamento de Psicología de la Universidad de Harvard. Es conocido por su defensa enérgica y de gran alcance de la psicología evolucionista y de la teoría computacional de la mente. Sus especializaciones académicas son la percepción y el desarrollo del lenguaje en niños; es conocido por argumentar que el lenguaje es un "instinto" o una adaptación biológica modelada por la selección natural. Sus cuatro libros dirigidos al público en general —El instinto del lenguaje, Cómo funciona la mente, Palabras y reglas y La tabla rasa— han ganado numerosos premios y le han dotado de renombre. Biografía y carrera Pinker nació en una familia judía de clase media de Montreal. Sus abuelos emigraron a Canadá desde Polonia y Rumanía y eran propietarios de una pequeña fábrica de corbatas.[1] Su padre, Harry Pinker, era abogado, y su madre, Roslyn, trabajó como orientadora vocacional y vicerrectora en una escuela secundaria. Su hermana, Susan, psicóloga infantil, es ahora periodista y columnista,[2] y su hermano Robert es analista político para el gobierno de Canadá. Contrajo matrimonio con la psicóloga clínica Nancy Etcoff en 1980, de quien se divorció en 1992. En 1995 volvió a contraer nupcias con la psicóloga cognitiva Illavenin Subbiah, nacida en Malasia. Francis J. Beckwith realiza una crítica al materialismo y al concepto de dignidad humana sustentado por Pinker.[4] Premios y reconocimientos En 2004, fue nombrado por la revista Time como una de las 100 personas más influyentes del mundo y uno de los 100 intelectuales más destacados por Prostect y Foreign Policy en 2005. Ha recibido doctorados honorarios de las universidades de Newcastle, Surrey, Tel Aviv y McGill.
