George Orwell (1903-1950), de son vrai nom Eric Arthur Blair, est l'auteur d'une œuvre très marquée par ses engagements politiques. Après avoir lutté contre l'Empire britannique en Birmanie, pour la justice sociale aux côtés des classes laborieuses de Londres et de Paris, puis participé à la guerre d'Espagne dans les rangs du P.O.U.M., il se consacre à une œuvre littéraire écrite, "directement ou indirectement, contre le totalitarisme et pour le socialisme démocratique". Témoin lucide de son temps, auteur notamment de La Ferme des animaux et de 1984, il meurt à quarante-six ans, et demande dans son testament qu'aucune biographie ne retrace sa vie.
