I Am Slaughter by Dan Abnett Book Summary

The Beast Arises is a Black Library event series, twelve books over twelve months detailing the greatest war since the Horus Heresy. Every book is packed with outrageous action and unexpected revelations as the Imperium is rocked by an ork invasion that tears the galaxy apart.

The Story
It is the thirty-second millennium and the Imperium is at peace. The Traitor Legions of Chaos are but a distant memory and the many alien races that have long plagued mankind are held in check by the Space Marines. When a mission to exterminate one such xenos breed on the world of Ardamantua draws in more of their forces, the Imperial Fists abandon the walls of Terra for the first time in more than a thousand years. And when another, greater, foe strikes, even the heroic sons of Rogal Dorn may be powerless against it. The Beast Arises… and it is mighty.

Read it Because
It's the start of a brand new (and more epic than the most epic thing you can think of) event series from Black Library. It's a brand new story set in an unexplored era of Imperial history and as well as showing the entire Imperial Fists chapter in action against an ork invasion of staggering scale, it gives us a look at Terra itself, the machinations of the High Lords and the start of the Imperium's slide into the dystopian horror we all know and love. Also, did we mention orks? Lots of orks. Seriously, so many orks.

I dub this series extremis diabolus. As a huge black library fan, these books are utter garbage. I could write a 2000 word essay on the blatant mistakes and disregard for current lore that's in these books but I'll just mention two. The successor chapters of the imperial fists find out earth is under attack by an orc attack moon. The proceed to shrug it off and pick another target literally saying that if terra falls its kind of meh and the imperium will get over it. Really? Never mind that the emperor gets blank by orcs and the astronomican would go out plunging the imperium back into old night. In the first book the author states that the astartes will die out in the next 200 years. Face palm... So renagade chapters have survived 10 thousand years but all of a sudden the founding loyalist chapters just can't make it any more? This is a complete mess, don't but it, it's not worth your money or your time.

Looks good but...... $15.99 for 220 pages? Absurd pricing.

Cliffhanger’s Disease. Some may enthuse about inexplicable, sudden endings. I don’t. In this instance, it’s simply an unwelcome invitation to buy yet another book. So whether the cause is authorial laziness or editorial greed, it’s a cheap shot aimed at the reader’s wallet.

Great Story. The price is ridiculous, but the story is great. Dan brings some much needed attention to the Imperial Fist and the politics of the post Horus Heresy imperium with some amazing twists and turns.

Regret purchasing. Ways too short for what I paid. Barely a novella for the price of a luxury hardback.

Overpriced. Nice story but GW pricing is absurd. Short story at a novel price.

Poorly planned and quickly written. I'm a huge BL and Abnett fan, so I was very excited to start a new series exploring the post heresy universe. Unfortunately, I have to give this book a scathing review. This can't be Abnett. It feels ghost written and poorly done at that. Character development is generic/predictable and the space marines are so shallow they were given cheesy "wall names" just to tell them apart. Everyone is a caricature: the sneaky assassin, the monotone space marine, the prideful general, and the ignorant/arrogant politicians. The writing is a perfect example of over-telling and not showing, reading more like a screenplay than a novel. The sheer amount of monologuing and unrealistic self-talk is hard to read. Also, IT'S POST HERESY! Paint me a picture, set the mood, do something to make me feel all hope is lost but we're still putting up a fight. Instead you get the feeling that the heresy was the girlfriend that you were ready to break up with so you could get back to just shooting things, page-after-monotonous-page, like nothing happened. SPOILERS: The plot is so paper thin I don't see how it made it to production. The unbelievably advanced ork tech, the barely mentioned annihilation of a space marine legion by silly insects, poor military decisions one after another, the list goes on and on. I guess, after the heresy, we just threw out military doctrine and transport the whole legion planet side without support because they're space marines right? Who could defeat them? And then their defeat is a side note, to move the plot along. While everything in this book is possible and well explained, it felt like watching an Olympic swimmer die from drowning. Sure it's technically possible, but so far fetched you can't get over the absurdity of it. And to top it off, the cover art makes space marines look like chubby football players wearing Halloween costumes. Yes this review is bad, but you gotta call a spade a spade even if it means offending one of the greatest sci-fi writers ever.

Just a Curtain Opener and a Dull One at That. Dan Abnett is normally pretty reliable and often brilliant - maybe he wrote this on a weekend? Since the main antagonists don’t arrive til the end we are stuck with Fists fighting giant cockroaches (no, not Tyranids) and gravity (yep gravity) for most of this colourless and oddly boring novella. I skim-read large sections, but the payoff wasn’t worth it. I will sample the next but so far it looks like the Beast Arises is best read on Lexicanium in summary form.

Return to form. Of all the Black Library authors Dan Abnett is the most talented story teller. Most of the others write linear battle reports which might excite a few war geeks but don't tell a story - Abnett writes better than that - he has character and pathos and builds worlds quickly and without awkward prose. I don't always like Abnett's take on the WH40K universe (though I guess this is the WH32K universe) as he is a bit too techno-thriller and avoids the gothic elements of the story (his assassins are Bourne style hit men, his Inquisitors are CIA agents, his space marines are butch US special forces) but aside from that, this splits between the breathtaking slaughter of the Astartes and the political machinations on Holy Terra (which are elements other authors avoid, but that Abnett does very well). A great start to the series - I hope Abnett does more like this - it's as good as Horus Rises and better than some of his later HH books where he seemed bored of the plot and kept inventing characters that were more powerful than the Emperor just to keep himself amused. This is closer to what works - lots of battle for those who only want bloodshed, but loads of complex ideas for those of us who want more than slaughter alone.

Awesome. Awesome

Rip off. 200 pages for £9.99 when there are 12 books in the series all released in the same year! It seems they are trying to bleed every penny from us as usual. The story isnt gripping either. I dont recommend based on the cheeky price point, also about 3-4 print errors where paragraphs are repeated, probably to boost word count!
