En su proyecto inicial El Parnaso mexicano, cuya primera entrega apareció el 15 de mayo de 1885, comprendería tres series, cada una de 12 números quincenales: esto es, 26 pequeños libros de 96 páginas, lo que haría un total de 3456 páginas. En la tercera serie, aparecieron finalmente solo 7 números. Esta labor hizo que El Parnaso contenga alrededor de 740 poemas. En total, intervinieron alrededor de 190 poetas. Sus editores explicaban que con esta publicación pretendían dar a conocer las composiciones de los poetas de México. Cada tomo era dedicado a un poeta distinto cuyo retrato y noticias biográficas formaban el principio de cada volumen. es sin duda, la más importante antología de poesía del siglo XIX.
