En 1713 Felipe V, primer Borbón de España, tras ganar la cruenta guerra civil de sucesión, reunió a las Cortes en Madrid y les exigió jurar que, para reinar, todo sucesor suyo debía nacer en España. Al morir su hijo Carlos III, no le correspondía el trono a Carlos IV, nacido en Nápoles, sino al hermano menor de aquel, elinfante don Luis de Borbón y Farnesio.
Esta novela histórica se sumerge en las intrigas de las camarillas cortesanas para desbancar al infante en favor del napolitano: a los ocho años le nombran cardenal de Toledo y de Sevilla; cuando renuncia por imperativo de conciencia, le arrinconan y él se resarce con veinte años de vida escandalosa.
Cuando el confesor obliga a don Luis a casarse, su hermano Carlos III, para preservar la corona, le impone una esposa no aristocrática: la guapa zaragozana treinta y dos años menor María Teresa de Vallabriga. Desterrados de la corte «real», el matrimonio forma la suya propia, siendo Goya su pintor y Boccherini su músico de cámara. Sus descendientes serán despojados de los honores dinásticos y «la infanta» no será reconocida como tal hasta la muerte de don Luis, después de tan solo nueve años de tormentoso matrimonio marcado por los reproches y el exilio.
