Rosso by John Logan Book Summary
La pièce è ispirata alla biografia del pittore americano Mark Rothko, maestro dell’espressionismo astratto, che alla fine degli anni Cinquanta ottenne la più ricca commissione della storia dell’arte moderna, una serie di murali per il ristorante Four Season di New York. Puntando i riflettori proprio su quel periodo, Rosso mette in scena lo scontro tra generazioni di artisti: tra Rothko, un uomo maturo che fa i conti con se stesso, e Ken, giovane allievo alla ricerca di un ‘padre’. «Il figlio deve scacciare il padre. Rispettarlo, certo, ma anche ucciderlo» – sostiene Rothko ripercorrendo la propria storia – «Abbiamo distrutto il cubismo, io e de Kooning e Barnett Newman». Dopo due anni di lavoro febbrile per realizzare i dipinti murali, sarà inevitabilmente Ken a mettere in discussione il maestro in uno scontro teso e feroce che lo spinge alla scelta radicale (ma intimamente coerente) di disattendere gli impegni con il Four Season.
