Parce qu’un castor avec qui il s’était lié d’amitié est tué par des trappeurs, le jeune Paul Watson âgé de onze ans écume les alentours de son village du Nouveau-Brunswick pour trouver et détruire les pièges. C’est le point de départ de quarante ans d’activisme pour celui que le Time Magazine désignera en 2000 comme l’un des plus grands héros écologistes du xxe siècle.
En 1969, à tout juste dix-huit ans, Paul Watson devient le plus jeune cofondateur de Greenpeace. C’est aussi le premier homme à s’interposer entre une baleine et un harpon. En 1977, il quitte Greenpeace pour fonder Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (c’est-à-dire « berger de la mer ») qui devient dès lors l’organisation de défense des océans la plus combattive au monde : une dizaine de baleiniers illégaux coulés à quai, plusieurs navires éperonnés en mer, des centaines de longues lignes et de filets dérivants confisqués, plus de deux cent cinquante expéditions dans toutes les mers du monde… et des centaines de milliers d’animaux marins sauvés.
Jamais aucun blessé, jamais aucune inculpation retenue mais pour ses opposants, Watson n’en est pas moins un « pirate », un « écoterroriste » – y compris pour ceux qui dirigent aujourd’hui Greenpeace, qu’il a quitté en 1977. Pour ceux qui, en revanche, pensent que « les pétitions et les banderoles ne suffiront pas à sauver les océans », il est un véritable héros.
À tous ses détracteurs Paul Watson ne répond qu’une chose : « Trouvez-nous une baleine qui désapprouve nos actions et on vous promet de raccrocher ! »
