Nell'aprile del 1974 Roland Barthes accetta l'invito delle autorità cinesi e parte per la Cina in compagnia di Philippe Sollers, Julia Kristeva, Marcelin Pleynet e del filoso Francois Wahl. I suoi carnet, finora inediti, offrono una visione disincantata di questo viaggio istituzionale.
La delegazione soggiace a un programma serrato di visite ufficiali attraverso fabbriche, scuole, ospedali, coltivazioni agricole, quartieri cittadini, mentre i delegati locali sfoderano informazioni e cifre sui successi della Cina maoista. Barthes diviene ben presto insofferente all'ossessiva ideologia. La sua attenzione si rivolge altrove, alle persone, ai gesti quotidiani, al gusto dei piatti, all'erotismo dei ragazzi cinesi, ai colori del paesaggio e, soprattutto, agli imprevisti, agli incidenti di percorso che sfuggono alla censura e dissolvono ogni artificio.
Annotazioni, impressioni, osservazioni ironiche: i carnet riflettono di continuo la volontà di non lasciarsi intrappolare dai meccanismi della retorica e degli stereotipi. Una visione personale della realtà cinese che si va formando lungo le tappe del suo viaggio.
