E possiamo tracciarne una storia che scorra parallela a quella del sapere? In questo breve saggio, sviluppo di un seminario tenuto al Collège International de Philosophie, Jacques Derrida si pone il compito di disegnare il perimetro del concetto di menzogna, confrontandosi con l'incerto statuto che la porta, fin dall'origine, a confondersi con la falsità, l'astuzia, l'errore, l'inganno e anche l'invenzione poetica. Ma se il filosofo francese è consapevole, con Montaigne, che "il rovescio della verità ha centomila aspetti e un campo indefinito", non rinuncia al suo tentativo di formalizzazione e procede con ironia e rigore nella sua indagine. Chiamando in causa Platone e Freud, Heidegger e sant'Agostino, Kant e Hannah Arendt, si delinea così il complesso (e spesso malinteso) rapporto tra menzogna e sapere, una relazione destinata a frustrare ogni tentativo di assolutizzazione teorica.
