Les actes du colloque « Octave Mirbeau : passions et anathèmes » dressent le portrait d'un personnage complexe et fascinant. C'est un hédoniste, avide de toutes les formes de la vie, qui a bien vu les possibilités de conquête qu'offre le progrès, et notamment l'automobile. C'est aussi un bon connaisseur des salons parisiens, et un chantre de l'amitié. En même temps, il est concerné de façon clinique par la douleur – personnelle, quand il s'agit de sa difficulté à écrire, collective face à la misère sociale. Sa trajectoire personnelle, faite de tensions, d'antagonismes, de préoccupations profondes, est tout entière dans son œuvre, et dans la théorie des personnages singuliers qui y défilent, si singuliers qu'ils ont suscité des adaptations cinématographiques, entre autres de Buñuel et Gion. Les choix d'écriture de Mirbeau conduisent le lecteur au vertige, devant le statut indécidable d'une œuvre qui entrouvre bien des portes qu'on peut hésiter à franchir. La théorie de l'art qui peut ressortir de ses divers écrits montre une grande intelligence de la place du lecteur, de la question du public, dans l'avenir de l'œuvre.
