Ya sea por razones personales, políticas o meramente aventureras, muchos autores europeos y latinoamericanos escaparon de sus países de nacimiento y atravesaron el Atlántico, adquirieron otra lengua e incluso escribieron en ese idioma que les prestó su nueva patria temporal. Traven, Artaud, Burroughs y Lowry en México; Hemingway en Cuba; Zweig, Bernanos y Cendrars en Brasil; César Vallejo y César Moro en París, pero también Breton, Lawrence, Gombrowicz, y Michaux, entre tantos otros, produjeron numerosas obras mayores a partir de esta errancia a ultramar. Unos partieron a Europa en busca de la cultura madre, otros vinieron a América a experimentar su fuerza vital y salvaje, allende desconocida. Sin embargo todos durante su estancia, forzosa o voluntaria, de este lado del océano o de aquél, recibieron el influjo creador de la expatriación y lo transmitieron a sus obras. Phillippe Ollé-Laprune, escritor parisino avecindado en México que desde hace dos décadas es también un vagabundo de la literatura y el intercambio cultural, expone con lucidez en este ensayo la estrecha y muy fecunda relación entre viajes y escritura.
