Shelter by Jay Crownover Book Summary

His life is chaos and confusion. It’s a storm of uncertainty and raging emotion.

Sutton Warner is a mess. Everything in his life feels like it’s unraveling.

He’s let a lot of people down lately, including his daughter. Sutton always promised his little girl he would never disappoint her and that he would always be there when she needed him. Until he wasn’t.

The truth is, he’s used to disappointing the women in his life. First was his mother who couldn’t find a reason to stick around when he was growing up. Then there’s his ex. The woman who takes unbridled delight in making his life incredibly complicated. Luckily, his daughter is still young enough to believe her old man is some kind of hero. But, he knows the day is coming when she realizes the truth, which is, he’s just a man with some serious flaws and a list of ever-growing weaknesses.

Finally, there’s the woman he’s desperately trying to forget with every shot tossed back and each pill popped.

He more than disappointed Emrys…he almost got her killed.

Her love is steady and sure. It’s a shelter shaped by conviction and silent assurance.

Emrys Santos is lost. Everything in her life feels pointless and futile.

She’s been busy running away from her feelings and all the people who love her the most—including her best friend, the one person who knows exactly what she’s been through. They promised to always stick together and to lean on one another. It was a promise Em had to break so she could lick her wounds and figure out her next move. For once, there is no easy way out of the tangled web of emotions she’s caught up in, and right now, she recognizes that all roads lead back to Wyoming…and back to Sutton.

The man she nearly got killed.

Shelter is a standalone novel, the second book in the Getaway series, which features the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them. These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

Shelter. Absolutely loved this book. Can’t wait to read Lane’s story...hopefully that one will be next!!

Great read. I love Jay Crownover’s books. I reread them all the time. Not your typical, predictable contemporary. A change of pace. The Warner boys are irresistible. I can’t wait for Lane’s book.

Shelter. I’ve been eagerly anticipating Sutton and Emry’s story since reading Retreat. I couldn’t put it down. Finished in one overnight read. Both characters hit rock bottom and end up helping each other rebuild even with waves of new chaos coming at them. Suspenseful and as always sexy. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Another great read. This was so fun with the females getting to be the heroine. I really felt like it was uplifting women and showing how much men sometimes need to draw from there inner strength.

Something about cowboys. If you haven’t read anything from Jay you’re missing out! Go ahead and take a vacay from work and settle in. This is by far my favorite series. Em & Sutton’s story was incredible. After every one of Jay’s books I think a story couldn’t be any better & every time she surprises me. This book is sure to please everyone who picks it up. And who knows, you might realize you want to go out and find your own cowboy.

Surly Sutton FTW!. Breathe in, breathe out. Man, this book was beyond what I could probably say as one of the wildest rides I’ve ever read in my life. It was definitely a difficult and painful tale to take in, but will no doubt cling to your heart and soul long after you’ve set the book down. This is yet just another proof of what I truly adore about Jay Crownover and her writing—she pushes you to the edge of your limits, but she also knows exactly where to draw the line. It certainly makes for an incredibly memorable journey filled to the brim with a kind of adventure that’s nothing short of keeping you on your toes—every chapter and every moment in between just burrows its way deep into your heart that you’ll be carrying it around with you for a really long time. If you’ve read RETREAT, the first book in the Getaway series, you’d know how much Em and Sutton have already gone through. The beginning of their story killed me—it’s one of the most heart-stopping and soul-tearing parts I’ve had to read, but it’ll make you understand just how deep their connection runs. These two were more than bound together by what they witnessed and experienced in that mountain; now, it’s even so much more than needing each other to heal and get the closure they both badly needed to move on from that incident. Diving into SHELTER, I don’t think I really knew what I was getting myself into, regardless of where RETREAT took me. The peak of Em and Sutton’s story almost blindsided me, which made this book even more outstanding to me. I got myself stuck on the healing process of these two, that I was a little dumbstruck when it suddenly threw me a curveball that I never saw coming. Truthfully, you’ll be flying through the pages of this book because it’s just that addictive—you won’t want to stop until you figure out what’s happening or where it’ll take you next. And the characters—the Warners have indeed already won my heart from the very start, but the more you get to know them, the more they steal every single piece of you. The loyalty, the love, the passion, the overprotective streak, the lengths they’re willing to go to, and the sacrifices they’re willing to make for their family just simply owned me. Hell, my entire being never really stood a chance. Jay Crownover truly went above and beyond with SHELTER—it gave me chills and left me with feels like there’s no tomorrow. The Getaway Series has clearly and successfully climbed its way up in becoming my top favorite series from her. If you’re looking for a romance novel that will rob you of your breath and lodge your heart up your throat; one that’s full of emotion and heat, and will take you on one hell of a thrilling ride—better get on the Getaway train. You will not regret a single second of meeting these overly passionate and enthralling Warner boys. They’re most definitely not your typical cowboys. Their stories just deserve to be read, devoured and taken in bit by freaking bit.

Hot!. The chemistry between Sutton and Em is hot! After what happened to Sutton and Em they were always going to be linked. As much as Sutton tried to keep his distance, Em just wasn’t going to have it! This book kept me on my toes from the beginning! My emotions were all over the place. There was anger, sadness, happiness and horney! I feel that that Retreat should be read before this one. It helps to let you know what Sutton and Em went through. Sets up the story for Shelter. Jay once again wrote an amazing book, that I highly recommend. I was gifted a copy for an honest review.

Complicated and Harrowing. Loved the second book in this series. It drew upon the past and took me into some sexy moments in the here and now. Can’t wait to read the third book! Gotta get these cowboys some lovers quick.

Brought me back... I’ve been having a rough go at life lately so books are my escape and let me say was this an escape. I love that I can relate to the characters in a way that make the story seem so real. Also as an avid CSI lover, this brought the factor of that in as well. Perfect book all around!!

So Good!!!. I loved everything about this book! So in love with this series! So glad Jay took a chance and wrote something different! I thought Retreat was going to be my favorite but Shelter just took over!! Can't wait for Escape!

Must One-Click Author. Jay Crownover continues to be a one-click author for me. I loved "Retreat" the first book in the Getaway Series and was excited to start Sutton and Emrys story and see where this ride was going to go. Their story has it all, drama, suspense, romance, chemistry, and redemption. I was immediately drawn in and couldn't stop reading until I finished (which is a common occurrence when I read one of Jay's books). I love that Jay always writes these multi-dimensional female characters. Emrys is a character that I think many can relate to and I loved watching her come into her own. Emrys and Sutton find what they need in each other and it is a wonderful process to watch. You don't necessarily need to read "Retreat" to read "Shelter" but you really should. This series is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Suspense and Romance Wrapped in Pretty Bow. I loved Shelter. It was by far an emotional and exciting read. Em, Sutton and Daye were tough and strong characters. I felt for what Em went through in Book 1 but to see her bounce back and find her inner strength I was just blown away. I was so peeved at Sutton in the beginning. For letting everyone down and just giving up on himself but once he found the light (Em) he was back alright with me! Ah I just loved the twists and suspense this book had. I had a feeling I knew where it was going to go after a certain scene. I can’t wait for Lane and Brynn. Thanks Ms. Crownover for this awesome read!

Rock Bottom Love Story. Emrys and Sutton’s love story starts out in a dark place of bullets and an almost death experience. Afterwards they were both broken and trying to comes to grub with what happened to them. Sutton struggles with his emotions while Emrys finds her strength and her shelter in Sutton and his daughter Daye, even after disaster finds them again. It’s a deeply emotional story that Jay has written that gets into the dark and the light of people spirits and souls. It wasn’t a light easy story but definitely one worth reading!

Fantastic!!!!!. Great read, I love Sutton and his commitment to his daughter!i so can wait for Escape....great writing once again Jay.

Uncanny. As a survivor I find solace in so many of your characters/story lines. I wish I could put into words all my feelings…just know…the representation, the story of how ANYONE can find love, is life changing.

Shelter. Just like all her books, you won’t want to put it down. Jay always gets to the happy ending in a way you don’t necessarily expect but that makes sense for the characters. Her books take on new perspectives and are outside the norm.

An emotional journey. I was so excited to read this story after we got a little taste of Em and Sutton in Retreat. This is a story where both Em and Sutton have to overcome a lot. It took me awhile to get into this story, it definitely didn’t hook me from the beginning. Once I got into it I couldn’t put it down and was sad to see it end. The chemistry between Em and Sutton was incredible. It’s truly an emotional journey. I highly recommend this book and look forward Lane’s story! *gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another #1. As always Jay does it again! I thought Cy was my hunka hunka but Sutton has him beat. I love the chemistry between Em & Sutton.

Strong Characters...brings you in. Sutton is a passionate man who just wants to take care of and protect those around him. This book showed a few true colors of small town ranching communities and I loved it. Everyone grew up together, everyone knew each other, and of course everyone is in involved in everyone’s business. The Warner brothers are strong characters and true cowboys.

So so good. I loved the book. Sutton and Emrys are so hot together. I can’t wait for the next Warner book. Love your books Jay.

These Warner brothers...... So... I want to start out by saying that I LOVED this book. At first it took me a little to get into... but once I was in it.... I was a goner. There are not many books I put my life on PAUSE for, this was one that I did. When we first met the brothers, we met Cyrus, and he was a whole lotta man. In this book we get to know Sutton... the ins and outs, the dirty and the clean. I love that this book has a certain realness to it... what with the addictions and such. I am so happy that Emrys did not run away again. She stuck to it. He was the first man who made her want to stick around. They both have darkness... but are also each other’s lights. I could not put this book down.... and am soooooooooo ready for Lane’s book

Loved it - finished it in one sitting. Book 2 in the Getaway series follows Sutton Warner (the middle Warner brother) and Emrys (Leo’s best friend). The book pretty much follows directly on from book 1 and although it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading Retreat first. As usual Jay Crownover hooked me in with her intense characters and unique writing style (she certainly has a way with words). Sutton continues to push Emrys away, unable to face her following the dreadful things that happened while they were held captive in Retreat (book 1). A story full of emotion, drama, and with a total whodunnit vibe going on I was addicted. After been shunned by Sutton, Emrys rethinks her life and decides to do what’s right by herself and those she loves. If that means defying Sutton and returning to Wyoming then so be it. Sparks fly and emotions are tested in this rollercoaster of a story that challenges both of them in ways they could never imagine. I've got to say, I did not want this book to end, as soon as I'd finished that last chapter I felt bereft and empty and I've not felt like that in a long time. What on earth am I to read now?

Jay is more than amazing!. I read every single book of Jays (some of them twice or three times) and I was never disappointed. If you like romance you’ll never go wrong with her stories. Shelter was a great read and deserves more than 5 stars.

Another Awesome Read!. Once again Jay Crownover has created characters that are relatable and who I really care about. This books draws you in and I loved spending time with Sutton and Em and being part of their journey. The dynamic with having a child involved was interesting and it was great having Cy and Leo still having big roles. Jay always creates settings that become real places to me, I loved how this book reflected on Retreat without being repetitive. Can’t wait for Escape! Definitely read this book and the series!

It's worth it. My favourite bit is the emotional journey. The excitement you can feel as the characters learn about themselves and falling in love, in its rawness and honesty. I love these books - they are real, gritty and sweep you into a whole different place for a time. Loving the cowboys - I want one!

Love this series!. Hot steamy read! The characters are endearing and relatable in their flaws. I’ve loved this series so far, can’t wait for the next book!

Shelter. Great read. Looking forward to Lanes story

Great read. This author never disappoints. Loved both the characters and story. Can't wait for the Lane-Brynn story. ❤️
