"Denn es fand sich bei diesem Manne ein mit Freundlichkeit gewürzter Ernst, und das Alter hatte seine Gemüthsstimmung nicht verändert. Freilich lernte ich ihn hochschätzen, als er noch nicht sehr bejahrt, aber doch schon im Alter vorgerückt war. Denn ein Jahr nach meiner Geburt war er zum ersten Male zum Consul erwählt worden, und in seinem vierten Consulate zog ich als sehr junger Krieger mit ihm nach Capua und fünf Jahre später vor Tarentum. Sodann wurde ich vier Jahre nachher Quästor, und dieses Amt bekleidete ich unter dem Consulate des Tuditanus und Cethegus, als jener in hohem Alter den Cincischen Gesetzvorschlag über die Geschenke und Gaben empfahl."
