Escritas en atín entre los años 397 y 400, las "Confesiones" relatan la peregrinación de un hombre hacia Dios, un itinerario tortuoso y atormentado, que se inicia en su infancia y se cierra en el año 387, fecha de su conversión al cristianismo. Para San Agustín, el origen de los bienes y males del hombre, el centro del combate que se libra en cada uno de nosotros, está en la conciencia y es profundizando en ella como se puede encontrar una vía de trascendencia hacia la realidad suprema en que se encuentra la verdad, el amor y la belleza.
