Il termine stagnazione secolare è stato coniato dall’economista Alvin Hansen durante la Grande Depressione (1929-1939). Settantacinque anni dopo, Larry Summers Segretario al Tesoro nell’amministrazione Clinton ed economista di fama mondiale, in un provocatorio intervento al fmi, si è chiesto se il concetto di stagnazione secolare non sia oggi il più appropriato per descrivere quanto sta accadendo all’economia mondiale. Il suo discorso ha suscitato un animato confronto sulle origini e la durata della crisi economica in corso e sugli strumenti per affrontarla.
