Der erste Teil des Lebens der Wienerin Ida Pfeiffer (1797-1858) verlief in ruhigen bürgerlichen Bahnen. Mit Mitte 40 entschied sie sich, ausgedehnte Reisen durch die ganze Welt zu unternehmen. Im Band »Eine Frauenfahrt um die Welt« berichtet sie von ihrer ersten Weltreise, die sie von 1846 bis 1848 unternahm. Ihr Weg führte sie über Hamburg nach Brasilien, Chile, Tahiti, Macau, Hongkong, Ceylon, Indien, Persien, und den heutigen Irak. Immer wieder hatte Ida Pfeiffer unterwegs damit zu kämpfen, dass ihr Erscheinen als allein reisende Frau großes Aufsehen erregte und an eine geordnete Weiterfahrt zunächst nicht zu denken war. Ida Pfeiffer war eine mutige Pionierin, die Grenzen der gesellschaftlichen Konvention austestete und hinausschob.
