Aristófanes, máximo representante del teatro cómico griego, retrata de forma brillante a esa sociedad ateniense tan rica cultural y socialmente, riéndose de ella a la vez que critica a personajes prominentes, políticas y actitudes de su tiempo.
Las cuatro obras que se presentan en este volumen de Aristófanes (el máximo representante del teatro cómico griego y único autor la Comedia Antigua del que nos han llegado obras completas) se enmarcan en un periodo histórico que significa el principio del fin de la hegemonía de Atenas en el mundo heleno. Aristófanes retrata de forma brillante a esa sociedad ateniense tan rica cultural y socialmente, riéndose de ella a la vez que critica a personajes prominentes, políticas y actitudes de su tiempo.
Las nubes, una parodia sobre la educación sofística ateniense, es famosa especialmente por la presencia de Sócrates, contemporáneo de Aristófanes, y por ofrecernos un retrato del filósofo muy distinto del que nos ofrecen los diálogos platónicos. Las avispas es un ataque directo contra el poderoso demagogo Cleón y el sistema jurídico ateniense, que estaba viciado y mantenía a vividores y personas sin oficio ni beneficio. Como otras obras de Aristófanes, La paz es una demanda de solución pacífica de los conflictos bélicos, en concreto de la Guerra del Peloponeso, que enfrentó a Atenas y Esparta y que marcó el último tercio del siglo v a. C. Por último, en Las aves, el comediógrafo arremete contra la sociedad ateniense en general y contra sus ansias colonialistas en particular, pero es también un canto a la libertad y a la búsqueda de la felicidad.
