Als Jon und der kleine Esel Simon sich zum ersten Mal begegnen, ist das von seinen Besitzern vernachlässigte Tier ausgehungert und schwach. Der Esel berührt etwas ganz tief in Jons Innerem, und er beschließt, Simon auf seine Farm zu holen und wieder gesund zu pflegen. Jon füttert den Esel mit den großen braunen Augen geduldig mit der Hand, geht mit ihm spazieren und liest ihm vor – und bald erzählt er ihm auch von seinen eigenen Sorgen und Nöten, ganz wie einem guten Freund. Allmählich gelingt es Jon, Simon wieder ins Leben zurückzuholen. Durch die Zeit mit dem kleinen Esel wird ihm klar, was Mitgefühl wirklich bedeutet: dass es unser Leben verändern und uns den Mut geben kann, Risiken einzugehen. Das Buch enthält viele bewegende Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien.
