En esta obra, Concepción Company aplica el concepto de revolución de Thomas Kuhn, expuesto en su obra La estructura de las revoluciones científicas, a la historia de la lingüística. Para ello, hace un recuento de los diferentes paradigmas que han guiado su quehacer, empezando con los pioneros de esta ciencia relativamente joven, quienes descubrieron y estudiaron el parentesco genético de algunas lenguas indoeuropeas, para luego analizar las contribuciones de los neogramáticos, el estructuralismo, la gramática generativa y el funcionalismo. La autora sintetiza y describe cada una de estas etapas y analiza la transición de una a otra, apuntando cómo se llevaron a cabo los cambios de paradigma y analizando en qué medida serían revoluciones. Se trata sin duda de una obra de divulgación interesante para todo público, pero especialmente para aquellos que quieran empezar a indagar en la ciencia del lenguaje.
