El conde polaco Jan Potocki, justamente celebrado por El manuscrito encontrado en Zaragoza, esa especie de serpentín fantástico que hace del tiempo y del espacio una verdadera fiesta para el lector, fue también un esforzado viajero por toda Europa, China y el norte de África. Fruto de uno de ellos es este Viaje al Imperio de Marruecos, de 1791.
"Soy el primer extranjero", dice Potocki "que ha venido a este país bajo la simple condición de viajero". Sabe lo que dice, porque ha leído todas las relaciones de todos los viajeros europeos que le han precedido. Él busca en Marruecos, dice, y los buscará en casi todos sus muchos viajes, "cambios de paisajes" que son "los verdaderos dominios del soñador solitario". Su profundo respeto por el islam descarta que tenga la más remota intención de facilitar una labor misionera cristiana.
