Das bunt zusammengesetzte Volk will endlich von einem König geeint und angeführt werden. Widerwillig erfüllt Gott ihm den Wunsch und lässt den jungen Saul zum Herrscher ausrufen, der anfangs umjubelte Erfolge feiert: Er gewinnt Kriege und gründet einen fest gefügten Staat, dessen Macht er stetig ausbaut. Doch immer mehr wird Saul von Selbstzweifeln geplagt, immer fataler bestimmen Misstrauen, Schwermut und Jähzorn sein Handeln. Er, der der Ursprung der neuen Ordnung ist – dem Wechsel von der Theokratie zur Monarchie –, wird zunehmend zu ihrer größten Gefahr. Gott muss erkennen, dass er die falsche Wahl getroffen hat, und nicht nur ihn reut seine Entscheidung, die zur Folge hatte, dass die alte Einheit zwischen ihm und den Menschen endgültig entzweit wurde.
Botho Strauß verdichtet die biblische Erzählung aus dem 1. Buch Samuel zum eindringlichen Porträt eines Menschen, der zerrissen wird von der ihm schicksalhaft zugeteilten Aufgabe, den in ihn gesetzten Erwartungen und den Grenzen seiner Fähigkeiten. In einer beeindruckend klaren und gleichzeitig hoch poetischen Sprache zeigt "Saul" die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geist des Alten Testaments.
