John Keats by Caroline Bertonèche Book Summary
Au XIXe siècle, John Keats fit l'objet d'une mythification qui, deux siècles après sa mort, continue de faire école. Par un jeu de détournements de la réalité, Keats s'est forgé une figure ambiguë qui favorisa les mauvaises lectures et interprétations de ses contemporains comme de ses héritiers. Nombreux furent les critiques à s'ériger en détracteurs de sa poésie, nourrissant la vision d'un poète à la personnalité hybride, dont la faiblesse, dite féminine, devait expliquer la morbidité précoce. Les membres du cercle de Keats ont également pris part au travestissement de l'artiste et de son œuvre, tel le peintre Joseph Severn qui, par la transmission de faits erronés, encouragea certaines trahisons du sens. De ces « mécompréhensions » sont nées diverses mythographies, dont la plus remarquable est certainement celle que déploie Percy Bysshe Shelley dans son Adonais. Admirateur rival, Shelley livre une élégie qui, si elle prétend rendre hommage au génie de Keats, interroge par ailleurs les modalités du genre ainsi que la façon dont le défunt poète avait conçu la pérennité de son art.
