The Companion by Katie Alender Book Summary

Winner of the Edgar Award for Young Adult Fiction!

The other orphans say Margot is lucky.

Lucky to survive the horrible accident that killed her family.

Lucky to have her own room because she wakes up screaming every night.

And finally, lucky to be chosen by a prestigious family to live at their remote country estate.

But it wasn't luck that made the Suttons rescue Margot from her bleak existence at the group home.  Margot was handpicked to be a companion to their silent, mysterious daughter, Agatha. At first, helping with Agatha--and getting to know her handsome younger brother--seems much better than the group home. But soon, the isolated house begins playing tricks on Margot’s mind, making her question everything she believes about the Suttons . . . and herself.

Margot’s bad dreams may have stopped when she came to live with Agatha – but the real nightmare has just begun.

Good and Fast Pace. There are some loop holes in this book which I wish to have been filled but I think overall the boom is good, fast paced and well written. Good for a standalone. And good suspense thriller it gives me sorta, like uninvited vibes or sucker punched

Absolutely addicting. The Companion by Katie Alender was the most bingeworthy book. This book had me hooked and reading until I was at the end sitting there, confused and disoriented from just how it good it was. Swipe for the synopsis! I’m giving this book 4/5 stars. Our main character Margot is very strong and very spirited, however she is not the smartest. Her adopted parents Laura and John were pretty interesting. Barret was.. yeah let’s not get into that quite yet. I loved the foreshadowing and the atmosphere of this book. The absolutely terror felt throughout the book was well executed, and the story was creative and very easy to follow, and binge read. I did not like our main love interest storyline. It was cute, but it felt weird to me, considering the context. I did enjoy it, but I felt it was.. weird. I also saw the ending coming 200 pages away from it, I do read a lot of thrillers, and watch a lot of horrors so I put 2 and 2 together from what I’ve seen in the past. This book was very addicting, my spooky season is starting off brilliant. I’m also at 86/100 books for my goodreads goal. It was originally 130 but I started the year off with a book slump. I’m hoping to hit my original goal at this rate!

Modern Take on Gothic Horror. The Companion is a fantastic novel that takes modern characters and puts them in the context of a gothic horror novel. An orphaned teenager is taken in by a wealthy family and brought to their secluded country estate to be a companion to their ill daughter. And as you would expect in a secluded country estate, the girl starts to see and hear creepy things and is bent on discovering what it really going on in this house. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I loved the characters, the setting was perfect, and the plot was interesting. Definitely an updated version of what you expect from the genre. It is very reminiscent of a Haunting of Hill House or Turn of the Screw. It’s not very scary, if that is what you are looking for. There are a few intense moments, but it is YA, so it's lighter. It really lends itself to a movie version. I think audiences would go for it.

A great fun book. This book is great to read for fun if you like mild thrillers without too much horror or gore. It has a good plot and the main character is likable. Barrett (the love interest) is not the best but he’s not horrible either. It’s overall very worth reading if you’re looking for some entertainment on a rainy day, but it’s not the best book ever either.
