Crêmilo está de tal maneira indignado ao ver ricos desonestos por todos os lados, enquanto ele mesmo é honesto e pobre, que consulta o oráculo de Apolo para saber se deveria ou não educar seu filho como um trapaceiro. O deus aconselha-o a seguir a primeira pessoa que encontre ao deixar o santuário e levá-la para ir morar com ele em sua casa. Essa pessoa é um velho cego que, sob pressão, revela sua identidade: trata-se de Pluto, o deus da riqueza, que Zeus cegara por estar desgostoso com os homens. Crêmilo decide obter a cura da cegueira de Pluto, de tal maneira que ele possa evitar as pessoas más e enriquecer apenas as virtuosas. A Pobreza intervém e tenta convencer Crêmilo a desistir de sua ideia, alertando-o para as conseqüências desastrosas de sua decisão.
As comédias de Aristófanes são a fonte mais autêntica para a reconstrução dos detalhes da vida cotidiana em Atenas na época clássica.
