Tot i que mai no es va definir com a catalanista, durant un temps Eugenio Trías es va acostar al catalanisme, època en què va escriure aquest text publicat a mitjan anys vuitanta, primer en català i posteriorment en castellà, i que llegit avui en manté viva la voluntat polèmica i il·luminadora. El catalanisme ambicionava, d'una banda, la reforma d'Espanya amb una proposta modernitzadora de l'Estat i, de l'altra, se centrava en la construcción d'un projecte desvinculat d'Espanya, amb un fort sentiment identitari reflectit en el que Jordi Pujol volia dir amb el seu ambivalent "fer país". Davant de tot això, Eugenio Trías reflexiona en aquest llibre sobre la complexa societat civil catalana i barcelonina, una societat sense Estat i en plet amb un Estat que no correspon del tot a aquesta civilitat moderna cristal·litzada en Barcelona. Trías busca la identitat i la diferència catalana, que xifra en la idea-força de Ciutat. Es tracta, doncs, d'acostar-se a la Catalunya-ciutat, a aquesta Catalunya que té en l'esperit civil, civilitzat i modern el signe d'identitat i la diferència específica dins del marc hispà.
