Los seres que se reproducen, los seres reproducidos, son seres distintos entre sí, separados por un abismo, y constituyen una fascinante discontinuidad. Pero, como individuos que mueren aisladamente en una aventura ininteligible, conservan la nostalgia de la continuidad perdida. La actividad sexual de la reproducción, de la que el erotismo es una de las formas humanas, permite reencontrar esa continuidad. En el momento en que se unen las células reproductivas, se establece una continuidad entre ellas para formar un nuevo ser a partir de su muerte. Por su parte, la muerte, la muerte violenta, manifiesta este esfuerzo de liberación en el mismo origen de las actividades humanas. Pero el deseo de muerte pone en cuestión la organización de las comunidades fundadas en el trabajo y la razón. De ahí surgen las prohibiciones, a lo que se opone o, mejor, se une, una superación necesaria de esas prohibiciones, su propia transgresión. Guerra y caza se unen aquí al incesto o a la orgía sagrada.
