Im antiken Griechenland und Rom gehörten Frauen zum vererbbaren Besitz ihrer Väter und Ehemänner. In der Neuzeit wurden Frauen als Hexen verbrannt, im 19. Jahrhundert verloren sie bei der Eheschließung den eigenen Besitz an den Gatten, dessen Züchtigungsrecht gesetzlich verankert war.
Bis heute kämpfen Frauen in hochentwickelten Industrieländern um gleiche Bezahlung für gleiche Arbeit. Witwenverbrennungen in Indien, Klitorisamputationen in Nordafrika und Massenvergewaltigungen in Kriegsgebieten sind traurige Realität.
Jack Holland stellt die misogyne Grundhaltung heraus, die sich durch die Geschichte nicht nur des Westens zieht, verfolgt sie zurück bis zu ihren Wurzeln in der griechischen Philosophie und in der christlichen Lehre, den beiden Eckpfeilern der abendländischen Kultur. Er zeigt, wie männliche Denker und Schriftsteller von Platon und Aristoteles über Juvenal und Rousseau bis Weininger die aberwitzigsten, mal wissenschaftlich, mal philosophisch untermauerten Begründungen für ihre Theorien der naturgegebenen Minderwertigkeit der Frau geliefert haben. Und er zeigt, dass sich hinter diesen Anschauungen auch tief sitzende Ängste des Mannes vor der weiblichen Sexualität verbergen.
Ein wichtiges Buch in Zeiten der #MeToo-Debatte.
