Las prohibiciones teatrales en Inglaterra y en la Suiza de Calvino anuncian la batalla. ¿Quién está legitimado para envenenar la mente del fiel, imprimir en las mentes de los espectadores los cánones de sus afectos? Pierre Nicole, editor de los Pensamientos de Pascal e ideólogo central del jansenismo afrontó en su Tratado de la Comedia la incompatibilidad de teatro y la vida cristiana: el autor teatral era un "envenenador de almas". Y todos percibieron que cualquier escena -también la política- quedaba deslegitimada. Corneille, Racine, Molière... se lanzaron a un debate en el cual se jugaba su oficio. El resultado es una de las más bellas justas intelectuales del siglo XVII francés.
