Cette biographie du chef sioux Crazy Horse est l'exemple même de la fusion entre l'art de la biographie et l'oeuvre littéraire. Né au sein des Oglalas, une des sept bandes des Sioux tetons-lakotas Crazy Horse, comme pour rappeler ses cheveux aux boucles un peu claires, portait tout jeune le nom de Curly. Perçu aux yeux des siens comme énigmatique, solitaire, le jeune chef exerçait auprès du « peuple profond » des Lakotas un prestige mystérieux. Il consacra sa vie à combattre un envahisseur dont la supériorité militaire et les épidémies qu'il apportait ont attiré sur les Indiens les pires malheurs et calamités. Sandoz, outre qu'elle s'attache à décrire « son homme étrange » dans l'émotion comme dans l'affliction, rapporte dans le souffle de sa passion, les événements historiques et personnels qui ont accablé la vie de « son héros ». Après une courte existence où se sont croisées joies simples, déconvenues, trahisons, défaites mais aussi victoires comme à Little Big Horn face au général Custer en juin 1876, Crazy Horse sera contraint, surtout par les siens, de se rendre. Le 5 septembre 1877, après avoir présenté sa reddition, il sera lâchement assassiné à Fort Robinson par un soldat... grâce à l'aide d'un de ses « frères Lakotas ».
Mari Sandoz (1896-1966) est née dans le Nebraska et a grandi sur les lieux où vécut Crazy Horse. Ses écrits sont imprégnés d'une enfance où elle côtoya toute petite les Indiens. Cela explique en partie une certaine manière d'écrire qui fait sa spécificité. Sandoz a de nombreux livres à son actif dont Automne cheyenne publié dans la présente collection.
