All'alba del 13 luglio 1942, gli uomini del Battaglione 101 della Riserva di Polizia tedesca entrarono nel villaggio polacco di Józefów. Al tramonto, avevano rastrellato 1800 ebrei: ne selezionarono poche centinaia come «lavoratori» da deportare; gli altri, fossero donne, vecchi o bambini, vennero uccisi. Ordinaria crudeltà nazista, si direbbe; ma gli uomini del Battaglione 101 erano operai, impiegati, commercianti, artigiani arruolati da poco. Uomini comuni, reclutati per estrema necessità, che non erano nazisti né fanatici antisemiti, e ciò nonostante sterminarono 1500 persone in un solo giorno. E il massacro di Józefów non fu che il primo di una lunga serie: in poco piú di un anno, il Battaglione 101 uccise altre 38 000 persone e collaborò alla deportazione a Treblinka e allo sterminio di oltre 45 000 ebrei. Alla fine della guerra, rimasero 210 testimonianze di membri del Battaglione 101: cosa pensavano, mentre partecipavano alla «soluzione finale»? Come giustificavano il proprio comportamento? E, soprattutto, per quale motivo furono cosí feroci ed efficienti nell'eseguire gli ordini? La spiegazione data da Christopher Browning è molto piú sorprendente e angosciante: un uomo comune può diventare uno spietato assassino per puro spirito di emulazione e desiderio di carriera.
