LA VENDA BY MIGUEL DE UNAMUNO by Miguel De Unamuno Book Summary
"Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo werd geboren in het middeleeuwse centrum van Bilbao, Baskenland, als zoon van Félix de Unamuno en Salomé Jugo. Als jonge man was hij geïnteresseerd in de Baskische taal en streden om een onderwijspositie in het Instituto de Bilbao, tegen Sabino Arana. De wedstrijd werd uiteindelijk gewonnen door de Baskische geleerde Resurrección María de Azcue.
Unamuno werkte in alle grote genres: het essay, de roman, poëzie en theater, en droeg als modernist in hoge mate bij aan het opheffen van de grenzen tussen genres. Er is enige discussie of Unamuno inderdaad lid was van de Generation of '98 (een ex post facto literaire groep van Spaanse intellectuelen en filosofen die de oprichting was van José Martínez Ruiz - een groep die Antonio Machado, Azorín, Pío omvat oa Baroja, Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Ramiro de Maeztu en Ángel Ganivet). Naast zijn schrijven speelde Unamuno een belangrijke rol in het intellectuele leven van Spanje. Hij was twee periodes rector van de Universiteit van Salamanca: van 1900 tot 1924 en van 1930 tot 1936, in een tijd van grote sociale en politieke onrust. Unamuno werd in 1924 door de regering uit zijn functie gezet, tot protest van andere Spaanse intellectuelen. Hij leefde in ballingschap tot 1930, eerst verbannen naar Fuerteventura (Canarische Eilanden), van waaruit hij naar Frankrijk vluchtte. Unamuno keerde terug na de val van de dictatuur van generaal Primo de Rivera en nam zijn rectoraat weer op. In Salamanca wordt gezegd dat de dag dat hij terugkeerde naar de universiteit, Unamuno zijn lezing begon met te zeggen: ""Zoals we gisteren zeiden, ..."", zoals Fray Luis de León vier eeuwen eerder op dezelfde plaats had gedaan, alsof hij helemaal niet afwezig was geweest. Na de val van Rivera's dictatuur begon Spanje aan zijn tweede Republiek, een kortstondige poging van het Spaanse volk om democratische controle over hun eigen land te krijgen. Hij was een kandidaat voor de kleine intellectuele partij Al Servicio de la República."
