Anthony Giddens wurde 1938 in Edmonton, Großbritannien geboren. Er studierte Soziologie und Psychologie in Hull und London und ist seit 1985 Professor an der Universität von Cambridge. Mit seinem bisherigen Hauptwerk "The Constitution of Society" (engl.; Die Konstitution der Gesellschaft), welches 1984 erschien, gelang es Giddens, eine Gesellschaftstheorie zu entwickeln, deren Neuheit darin besteht, als Ausgangspunkt sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschens weder beim Individuum, noch bei der Gesellschaft anzusetzen. Dadurch überwindet Giddens den erkenntnistheoretischen Subjekt-Objekt-Dualismus, welcher die soziale Wirklichkeit entweder aus Sicht des individuellen Akteurs, oder als dinghafte Strukturobjektivität zu fassen versucht. Statt dessen versucht Giddens, dem rekursiven Charakter der menschlichen Praktiken theoretisch gerecht zu werden als einem Prozess kontinuierlicher Strukturierung, in dem Struktur und Handeln integral ineinander greifen (vgl. Hillmann 1994: 299). Der Anspruch dieser Arbeit kann es natürlich nicht sein, diese komplexen Zusammenhänge umfassend zu erläutern. Daher beschränkt sie sich auf einen wesentlichen Teilaspekt im Denken von Anthony Giddens. Der Dimension der Zeit und die Auswirkung dieser Erkenntnisse auf die giddensche Handlungstheorie. Wie im Anschluss gezeigt werden soll, ist für Giddens eine genaue Betrachtung des Zeitbegriffes unabdingbar für alle seine Theorieansätze und sein gesamtes strukturtheoretisches Programm.
