Si mai us heu trencat de riure llegint els relats còmics i misantròpics de David Sedaris i potser pensàveu que sabíeu on us ficàveu amb la lectura de Calipso, us equivocaríeu. Quan compra una casa de platja a la costa de Carolina, Sedaris simagina que hi passarà llargues vacances relaxants, jugant a jocs de taula i prenent el sol amb la gent que estima. I la vida a la seva segona residència és exactament tan idíllica com shavia afigurat, tret duna evidència minúscula i irritant: és impossible fer vacances dun mateix. Amb Calipso, Sedaris dirigeix les seves fenomenals dots dobservació cap a la mitjana edat i la mortalitat. Però no us equivoqueu: aquests relats són divertidíssims és un llibre que us pot fer arribar a roncar de tant de riure, com només ho pot fer la família. Lescriptura de Sedaris no havia estat mai tan afinada, i la seva capacitat descandalitzar el lector i provocar-li una riallada no té parallelisme. Però gran part de la comicitat en aquest volum parteix del moment vertiginós en què el propi cos et traeix i tadones que la història de la teva vida està més formada de passat que de futur. Es tracta de literatura de platja per a gent que detesta la platja, lectura obligatòria per als qui avorreixen la xerrameca i aprecien un bon acudit sobre tumors. Calipso és el llibre de Sedaris més mordaç i tendre alhora; i podria molt ben ser el millor.
