Die Zeit von 1694 bis 1763 wird auch Augusteisches Zeitalter der sächsischen Geschichte genannt. Der hochbegabte und kunstsinnige Kurfürst Friedrich August I. von Sachsen (August der Starke) und sein ebenso kunstbegeisterter Sohn und Nachfolger Kurfürst Friedrich August II. regierten das Land - nach dem Vorbild Ludwig XIV. von Frankreich - als absolutistische Herrscher.
Während sich unter August dem Starken die Porzellansammlung und die Pretiosensammlung (das "Grüne Gewölbe") zu den reichsten Kunstsammlungen ihrer Art in Europa entwickelt hatten, erfuhr unter Friedrich August II. die Gemäldegalerie ihre bedeutendste Erweiterung. Damals kam auch Raffaels "Sixtinische Madonna", das Hauptwerk der Galerie, nach Dresden. Durch die von hohem Kunstverständnis geleitete Sammelleidenschaft des Landesherrn entwickelt sich die Dresdner Galerie zu einer der bedeutendsten Gemäldesammlungen Europas.
