Alfred Brooks is scared. He’s a high-school dropout, and his grocery store job is leading nowhere. His best friend is sinking further and further into drug addiction. Some street kids are after him for something he didn’t even do.
So Alfred begins going to Donatelli’s Gym, a boxing club in Harlem that has trained champions. There he learns it’s the effort, not the win, that makes the boxer—that before you can be a champion, you have to be a contender.

Great book. What a great book I have to write a project on it and I will easily get a A
One of the best books I ever read. I usually don't read that much but my class had to read it for school. We where supposed to finish it in sections but by the 5 day I was all ready done with it. I highly recommend this book to young adults I had a life lesson. But I am not going to tell u it u will have to read it to find out

The Contender by Robert Lipstye. Such an amazing book! Once I started reading it, I didn't want to stop. It took me nearly 3 whole days to finish this book! After reading this great novel, I've decided that I'm going to read more books that were also wrote by Mr. Lipstye.
Recommended. I'm 13 and this book is good. I did it for a book report an in 2 days I had it done. I hate too read but this book was amazing! Highly recommended! The book tells you a lot about life.
