The Upstairs Room Book Reviews
The Upstairs Room by Johanna Reiss Book Summary
When the German army occupied Holland, Annie de Leeuw was eight years old. Because she was Jewish, the occupation put her in grave danger-she knew that to stay alive she would have to hide. Fortunately, a Gentile family, the Oostervelds, offered to help. For two years they hid Annie and her sister, Sini, in the cramped upstairs room of their farmhouse. Most people thought the war wouldn't last long. But for Annie and Sini — separated from their family and confined to one tiny room — the war seemed to go on forever. In the part of the marketplace where flowers had been sold twice a week-tulips in the spring, roses in the summer-stood German tanks and German soldiers. Annie de Leeuw was eight years old in 1940 when the Germans attacked Holland and marched into the town of Winterswijk where she lived. Annie was ten when, because she was Jewish and in great danger of being captured by the invaders, she and her sister Sini had to leave their father, mother, and older sister Rachel to go into hiding in the upstairs room of a remote farmhouse. Johanna de Leeuw Reiss has written a remarkably fresh and moving account of her own experiences as a young girl during World War II. Like many adults she was innocent of the German plans for Jews, and she might have gone to a labor camp as scores of families did. "It won't be for long and the Germans have told us we'll be treated well," those families said. "What can happen?"...

THE BEST BOOK IN THE HISTORY OF EVER!!!!. Please read my full review! I was in the school library looking for a book. Our teacher gives us fifteen minutes to get three books. I wasted ten minutes because I had used the bathroom on the way there. I had five minutes left to get three books. I found the book I had been wanting to read lately, The Doll People, even though I read it 7 times already, then I found The Popularity Papers, which I read 4 times already, they only have the first book of 7. I needed one more book in less than three minutes. I hurried to the biography section for a book on Cesar Chavez. I was skimming through and found a book out of place. I picked it up. The Upstairs Room. The cover was white with a very good drawing of a grassland and a little house. Very different from the cover they have on the app. I took it with me and got my books checked out. Back at class we had to do silent reading so I sat in the rocking chair in the corner of the room with The Upstairs Room book. Immediately, I was hooked. They had such good details and true information on the thing. I didn't even know that concentration camps killed them with gas and baked them in ovens. All my mom told me was they were worked to death. It was a magnificent book and I am convincing my Mom to order it online. If not I will buy and iTunes card and buy the book on here!
Great!!. This was a great book!! I almost cried when i reached the last few pages!!! But then i discovered theres a sequel!! Yay!!
Great book at any age. I read this book when I was about 10 years old & I bought for my own daughter & then decided to read it again. It was still a good read & I'm now looking for the sequel as an e- book & having a very hard time finding it.
The upstairs room. This book was awesome and I am a kid who is reading this book. This book is a good read for children and adults and it gave me plenty of information about the Nazis. What I found really interesting was that Jews were killed in concentration camps then put in ovens to be baked. The scary thin is that they can still be alive before they are put in ovens.
Great book. This book was awesome I'm looking forward to the second book
