Onfray es el académico que sale a la calle para decirle al mundo: la historia del pensamiento que os han contado es sólo la más conveniente a la serenidad de los poderosos. Al idealismo de Platón, de los Padres de la Iglesia y de Kant se opone otra línea que no ve el cuerpo y el placer como un obstáculo para el conocimiento, sino todo lo contrario. En el primer capítulo, el filósofo se presenta en carne viva: «Fallecí a la edad de diez años...» Es el momento en que ingresa en el orfanato. Los tormentos de aquellos años muestran cómo el cuerpo del filósofo es la matriz y la materia de que están hechas las ideas. Nietzsche es la figura tutelar de esta contrafilosofía, pero también Montaigne, Pascal, e incluso Descartes. En las dos palabras que integran el subtítulo de esta obra, Manifiesto hedonista, está el programa de la labor que Onfray viene realizando. «Manifiesto» por su potencia política y «hedonista» por su reivindicación del potencial liberador del placer y de la necesidad de romper con la tradición que nos ha hecho creer que el mundo material no cabe en el cielo de las ideas.
