Death Comes to Pemberley by P. D. James Book Summary

A rare meeting of literary genius: P. D. James, long among the most admired mystery writers of our time, draws the characters of Jane Austen’s beloved novel Pride and Prejudice into a tale of murder and emotional mayhem.

It is 1803, six years since Elizabeth and Darcy embarked on their life together at Pemberley, Darcy’s magnificent estate. Their peaceful, orderly world seems almost unassailable. Elizabeth has found her footing as the chatelaine of the great house. They have two fine sons, Fitzwilliam and Charles. Elizabeth’s sister Jane and her husband, Bingley, live nearby; her father visits often; there is optimistic talk about the prospects of marriage for Darcy’s sister Georgiana. And preparations are under way for their much-anticipated annual autumn ball.

Then, on the eve of the ball, the patrician idyll is shattered. A coach careens up the drive carrying Lydia, Elizabeth’s disgraced sister, who with her husband, the very dubious Wickham, has been banned from Pemberley. She stumbles out of the carriage, hysterical, shrieking that Wickham has been murdered. With shocking suddenness, Pemberley is plunged into a frightening mystery.

Inspired by a lifelong passion for Austen, P. D. James masterfully re-creates the world of Pride and Prejudice, electrifying it with the excitement and suspense of a brilliantly crafted crime story, as only she can write it.

Life comes to Pemberly. A worthy successor to Pride and Prejudice. I'm proud to admit the author overcame my prejudice that any modern sequel could do justice to Austen's wit and style. Verbose, indeed, but absorbing.

Brilliant!. A must read for any Austen fan. Want to know what happens after "the end"? Read on, friend, and rediscover the delights of long beloved characters.

With Love, Pemberley. Miss Austen would have been greatly pleased with the turn of the lives of her many characters unde Ms. James' pen. This story was wonderfully told. I loved every minute if it.

Death Comes to Pemberley. I am a big fan of Jane Austen and a big fan of P.D. James and so I thought this book would be amazing. I was seriously disappointed. James may have nailed the language, but the characters are so flat and deadly boring and the mystery is a snore.

Alright. I was underwhelmed by this look at life at Pemberly. I did not like the way Elizabeth was portrayed the book was alright but it did not read like a mystery. plus I don't think Austen's characters were captured by this author.

Delightful read. P.D.James has remained true to the original storyline, writing tempo and style of Jane Austin. We will never know what Jane destined for her beloved characters, but I am satisfied that PD James extrapolation of the characters is natural and logical. One which would not displease the irreplaceable Jane Autin.

Loved It!. Great read...great story...lots of good historical detail. I'm going to read more P. D. James.

Contrived. Not good

Sequel to Pride and Prejudice..... Beautifully written and very evocative of Jane Austin. The solution to the mystery cannot be deduced from the evidence however, and story gets difficult to follow

Too wordy. The style of writing was too wordy for me. I really didn't buy this book to analyze it but there were so many mundane descriptions of scenery it felt forced that the author was trying to relate scenery to some foreshadowing (esp. with the part about the wind howling and the anxious feelings *rolls eyes*). Anyways, the book was too dramatic as well as redundant and totally not original. Most of the book was paraphrasing Pride & Prejudice and the only original parts were the parts I thought were tangents to what I really wanted to read about: Elizabeth & Darcy. If it wasn't for the author's high credibility I'd say this book was nothing but a really well paraphrased version (and then some...) of Pride & Prejudice.

Death comes to Pemberley. While imitation is the most sincere form of flattery the author should look for other ways to express her admiration for Jane Austen. To dare touch a classic such as Pride and Prejudice and mingle the work with namedropping from yet another Austen novel proofs nothing more but poor taste. The borrowed phrases from the original left me as a reader with more than a hint of annoyance.

D ComesToPemberley. I will not tell you of her insights which were excellent and well founded, however her telling of the continued story bore some repeated scenes over and over again. If you are a Jane Austen fan I would recommend it for the highlights of the characters.

Meh.. I am a fan of Pride and Prejudice, but was underwhelmed by this book. I saw Elizabeth Bennett as having a more subdued fire about her than in this book. A spice. As for the mystery, it wasn't spine tingling to me. I didn't feel an urgency to uncover what really happened. It was very vanilla. I'd give two and a half stars if I could.

Death Comes to Pemberley. True to Austen's style, an enjoyable read.

Not up to her usual standards. As a fan of both P.D.James & Jane Austen, I was somewhat disappointed by this book. It was lacking the modernity of Baroness James' previous works, and the snarky humor of Miss Austen's.

Interesting twist on Austen. If you love Pride and Prejudice and PD James, this is a great read.

Boring. Wow, just awful. This was a waste of money. Boring, repetitive, craggy, mundane... Don't, just don't.

Death Comes to Pemberlel. P.D. James hardly needs my enthusiastic approbation, but she has it nonetheless. I've read and enjoyed more than ten of her novels, but I rate this one the best, possibly because I'm a devotee of Jane Austen, as is, apparently Ms. James. I loved the convoluted plot, the 19 century language, the feeling of being transported to a time when conventions were observed and family honor and image were paramount. I found nothing to dislike about this engaging novel!

A long-enduring disappointment. As a Pride and Prejudice enthusiast, I was ecstatic to happen upon a continuation of my favorite novel. Perhaps my expectations were unfair, but Death Comes to Pemberley (DCP) is by no means a tribute to the style of Jane Austen. The chapters are tedious and repetitive. And by repetitive, I mean to convey that the general plot is introduced, reviewed - chapter after dull chapter, and then summarized yet again. I have always sincerely appreciated Ms. Austen's attention to a detailed and witty conversation between characters which typically projected deeper inferences. The dialogue between characters in DCP is fact-based, redundant, dull, and littered with an extreme excess of socially-obligatory addresses. Nothing would have ever been accomplished in the 1800s if processes were constrained to the manner of speech projected to be commonplace by PD James. I felt no attachment to any character. I deduced the author had no intention of developing an alliance nor repugnance towards either hero or villain. Further, it was never clear which character deserved those titles, as the author maintained an opaque defense of every character involved. Elizabeth's character did not maintain her vivacious personality. Darcy was portrayed as dull and weak. The final chapter presents a fair resolution and the epilogue is endearing. Also, the reference to "Emma" is reflectively charming. In summary, a saga not worth polluting the esteemed fates of Elizabeth and Darcy.

I wanted to love it, but.... The mystery at the heart of the novel was not particularly gripping. After all, it's hard to find sympathy for Wickham... James' foray into Austen's work felt right, and I enjoyed the references to other Austen novels, but as a mystery? Nah.

Intriguing and satisfying. This is the first I have read of PD James and not the last. Her ability to lay out a story and keep you engaged by its often subtle twists and turns was masterful. If doesn't end until the last page, you are always learning more of the relationships among the characters. Well worth your time.

The shades of Pemberly.... As a big Jane Austin fan I say bravo. Those of us who are Austin-ites have no new material to absorb and love and this novel was a lovely addition to the extended Austin Library. It was very reminiscent of Jane's style and I enjoyed it. The mystery was well crafted. The reference to the characters from "Persuasion" brought forth a smile as I read thru them. I did miss the antics of Lydia....her character was strangely quiet thru out the trial. I enjoyed the references to Mr Bennett. The characters were not re-spun but "continued" in the right fashion. The Baroness of Holland Park was quite right as she entered the psyche of one of the greatest literary characters....Mr Darcy.

Atrocious!!. The only thing that kept me turning the pages was the hope that this book would get better and take on a life of it's own. I'm not an author but I would not have done Jane Austen the dishonor of this very poor attempt at prolonging the story of Pride and Predjudice and then to have thrown in story lines from Emma along with it. There is a reason why original works of art should be left alone and this book is a living argument to that opinion.

Never less than tedious. Fans of the author and of Austen will both be dissatisfied.

Just okay. The book was very predictable and flat. Not something I would recommend.

Pale shades of Jane Austen's characters ..... Not a bad book, but not great either. If you are in love with pride and prejudice, you will not find a continuance here. Elizabeth is just a pale shade compared to what Jane Austen made her - you won't find any of her wit, confidence and spunk in this Elizabeth Darcy. Dominating character is colonel fitzwilliam, which is also completely out of character compared to the original. Overall an ok story, but it should not have been done using the setting of pride and prejudice, it does not do it any justice whatsoever.

Death Comes to Pemberley. P.D. James has done Jane Austen a grave injustice with a thin, oft repeated, ultimately boring, story line, and too much time spent in the woods of Pemberley. Shortly into the book I realized I was reading a snoozer written by one of my favorite authors, about some of my favorite Austen characters, and had not been able to predict this from the downloaded sample. Too bad.

Pemberley lives on!. An amazing sequel true to the Austen tradition.

Death comes to pemberley. Entertaining as a Pride and Prejudice sequel with a who dunnit twist. Not a murder mystery lovers must have. Light, fun read for Austin fans

Surprising!. I initially didn't want to read this book because I didn't think that P.D. James would be able to accurately capture my beloved characters. How surprised I was...she is spot on! Pride and Prejudice must be her favorite book too! Great job!

Disappointment. While PD James may have mastered the art of mystery writing, this book proves her dismally unsuited to carry on the tradition of fine tuned, character driven prose, that marks Jane Austen's witty repartee. This book is boring, like a school paper written to prove the writer has read all works by an author, weaving those characters together in a loosely woven "plot" by name dropping them into peripheral, inconsequential places, just to be sure she has included as many characters and backstories as possible to give the present work validity and gravitas. All to no avail. The work does not satisfy Austen hungry fans, nor does it work as a good mystery. What a huge disappointment! If you love Jane Austen, you will not love this book.

Waste of time. I have an idea! I'll write a cheesy, boring, uninspired mystery story and I'll trick people into buying it by using the main characters from Pride and Prejudice. I won't have to do any of that tedious character development, and I can invent a murder in the woods on the Pemberly estate. I can write this in a day or two! The next book I write will be "A Dark Night at Tara" where Ashley Wilkes faces trial for a crime he did not do....or did he?
