An entertaining and informative book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge of the West back before the frontier was closed. For example, it covers in detail such mountain men as Jedediah Smith and Jim Bridger, men I had heard of but knew little about, as well as a variety of colorful characters, heroes and scoundrels. Their stories are told in the mountain vernacular, not so much to be pretentious as out of affection. The Indians too are touched on with care and respect. The book does not claim to be unbiased. As Blevins himself says, “This book...tells the story of the mountain men from their own perspective and not from some independent, “objective” pedestal of judgment. To try to evaluate the way the mountain men and Indians treated each other “objectively,” could only mean to evaluate it from a perspective that participates in the cultural bias of neither. Such a perspective may some day be formulated. But it seems to me that we speak meaningfully only when we look at the encounter from the well-meaning, deep biases of both sides.” A good read! I was sorry when it ended.

Boring, rambling. Poorly written, boring. It took a lot to make a great subject this boring, but the author managed to do it.
