In Calabria by MARY BERENSON & Bernard Berenson Book Summary
Nel 1900, Bernard Berenson sposò l'americana Mary Smith. I due avrebbero vissuto insieme per quasi mezzo secolo e avrebbero condiviso la passione per il viaggio che li portò, negli anni, ad effettuare numerosissime escursioni automobilistiche in Italia. Per i coniugi Berenson l'automobile dava spazio ad un ritrovato gusto del viaggio di formazione, che affidavano agli itinerari d'arte e alla percezione attenta del paesaggio antropico. Mary e Bernard scoprono "l'aspetto più incantevole del viaggio in auto", ovvero "le lunghe ore di sogno con un panorama di meravigliosi scenari incontaminati". I Berenson sono due sofisticati flâneurs, la cui indole aristocratica "rende intollerabile l'esibizione personale ed il mondo meccanico". Essi usano l'automobile come i viaggiatori del grand tour adoperavano la carrozza.
Il diario di Mary Berenson, è qui pubblicato per la prima volta, limitatamente alla parte calabrese del viaggio. Nel 1955, ormai novantenne, il vecchio Berenson affronta da solo un nuovo viaggio in Calabria. Troverà la regione profondamente mutata e resterà sorpreso dalle belle strade asfaltate, dai nuovi alberghi ma allo stesso tempo osserverà compiaciuto che il territorio non è ancora intaccato dalle rovine della modernità. La poesia della Calabria, per lui, risiede soprattutto nel paesaggio, che contemplò, seduto "all'ombra di rocce favolosamente romantiche".
